Mouse Trap Effective Resource in Questions
How can I make a mouse trap most effective? Where do i put it and what is the best bait? I recently discovered a little mouse in my room, and bought a trap to kill it. I also bought poison but i prefer the trap so i know where to look for a dead rat before it rots away, but how can i make the trap most effective? I heard mice don't like cheese, and since i do not know exactly where the mouse is coming from, where should i put the trap? And also, my trap is a plastic one, with a spring mechanism but with a plastic, not metal bar: is it still guaranteed to kill the mouse? If anyone has used a plastic mouse trap and effectively caught a mouse i would like to know what steps you took to ensure best results. I have locked the mouse in my room, I found it there after I had vacuumed the whole place, so there should be no food except for the trap and the poision. Also and finally, since i have found no visible holes anywhere in my room, what other signs should i look for to identify the mouse nest? Thank you for taking the time to read my question. P.S. This morning I awoke to find one of my traps had gone - completely. There is NO sign of it around the house. My first instinct was to think that the mouse might have been bigger than i thought and he could have possibly run away with the trap. What do you think? Do i have a trapped rat roaming around? Also, does anyone know where i can get a mousetrap around Hammersmith, Fulham Palace road, London? all the shops i know of are all a minimum of 30 mins commute! Cheeri-o!

Jsy grl replied: "mice like sweet things like jam"

Stu pid replied: "Try something sweet in the trap like chocolate, it does work."

daniel m replied: "i would put it in the attic or beside the boiler cause there really dark and slightly damp, i have heard people use peanut butter but i don't know why!!, i always use some smelly cheese!"

wannaplaytoo2001 replied: "in the trap use try bacon, I'm sure your plastic trap will do the job.....if you have a shelf in your closet with clothes on it check there a nest also in your dresser.....look for tuffs off paper, cloth, yarn...you'll know it if you find it"

ALLEN B replied: "Mice love Mars bars"

annie replied: "a chocolate chip will work every time!! put your trap along a wall or corner...don't worry, he will find it in no time!! keep in mind thou, even when you catch him, you may want to keep a baited trap around...he may have friends!"

Matthew C replied: "You can go to walmart right now and but some VICTOR mousetraps they probably come in a pack of three or something like that. They are very inexpensive and even more effective. I would imagine that the design of that trap hasnt changed since they started making mousetraps. After you get a trap that will actually kill a mouse, put it along a wall because mice like to stay secure like under things and when they do move it is gonna be along a wall, unless something makes it run across a room. Peanut butter does work just because it is sticky and the more he messes with the end of that trap trying to get that food off the more likely it is youll have one less mouse around. Good Luck!!"

eugene c replied: "Hi, Cheese smeared with a little smooth peanut butter will do the deed. If your mouse is not hungry, just put a deep tray half filled with water with a small ramp access and you will find the mouse drowned in the morning. They are always thirsty."

sarah c replied: "Chocolate, choc chip cookie or bacon are the most attractive baits; but the best place to put the trap is flush against the wall. Mice and rats don't like to cross open spaces, so tend to run along the walls. If you use a live trap you need to take it a long way from the house or it will find its way back!"

hcurbeson replied: "put chocolate on the mose trap and put it next to the couch"

Woodworkingmenace replied: "Ok, mice like to go "along" the walls... (I guess it makes them feel secure and safe if they have thier bodies against something and maybe it acts like a guide to them). What you do is, put the trap so that the "spring action", (the place you put the bait), is against the wall, so that they will "find" it a lot easier. Now, mice can be tricky and smart. Its recommended that you put "two" traps together so that if they spring the first one, they will get trapped in the second one! (Yea, its something I didnt know either, until I did some resarch into this subject). Now, the best thing is peanut butter, or just plain butter. (my Wife and her family swear by this!). Also, make sure you buy the "right trap"! If your sure its a wee mouse, then get a small one, but, if its a big rat, then get a big trap. Yes, it "does" make a difference, as one will not catch the other! I wish you well... Jesse"

patriciap replied: "Peanut butter works because they need to work at getting it all off the bait trap. Dont know about plastic trap but believe I would want to get the wood and metal. Wouldnt want the little fellow to suffer from only being injured. After catching him reset trap to catch any mates or friends he might have."

CJ replied: "Peanut butter is easy to use and works well. I don't know if i have used the exact mouse trap you are talking about but I have used most of them just make sure it is from a good manufacturer like victor, not some cheap trap from a dollar store The plus of plastic is that they don't rust and are easy to clean The mouse may have wandered in from under a door they only need such a small crack you may never find where it came in Mice roam and there may not be a nest close by. One of the easiest ways to know you have mice is look for mice turds. PS mice can carry hanta virus so they are not harmless( although usually deer mice) PS good idea with not using poison. that works if the mice are are outside in a building but not good idea inside or in a vehicle Mice can make a nest out of paper fabric insulation just about anything. Mice like to run along walls and hide behind and under furniture and appliances Also you said Room not house. If someone else in the house or dorm / apartment has the mouse problem then you are going to have a real bad time getting rid of the mice.because you are just getting the overflow from their problem. If this is the case you need a pest control company to do the building or move. BY the Way KEEP YOUR TRAPS SET FOR A COUPLE WEEKS you may not have just 1 mouse"

D replied: "chocolate is what people are now using, something like a piece of mars bar. The little rascal is probably coming through a very tiny hole. Check outside your house and any hole which you can easily put your finger in is big enough for a mouse to come through. My last mouse in the house fell into the bath and couldn't get out so i had to get a neighbour to lift him out for me. It was funny watching him looking up at me. Hope you get yours soon"

sanny replied: ",My you are all so cruel on here.Get a humane trap where you catch the mouse and take it outside and set it free, quite simple, and the poor mouse comes to no harm how anyone can kill a harmless living creature is beyond me."

Mick replied: "Bacon rind on your trap ,leave the trap at the side of your skirt ting board ."

3J&2A replied: "We used to live in the country and caught mice all the time. Although we never used a plasic trap so I don't know how effective it will be? We put peanut butter on a piece of bread and stuck it to the trap. If you saw it in your room I would use more than 1 trap. Put one under bed next to wall, put one in closet next to wall, and one behind dresser next to wall. Also, if you catch one I would continue to keep traps out for the next couple of weeks especially in the kitchen behind refridgerator."

nyfellas replied: "hello. just simply you should use VICTOR mouse traps. 4 packs = appro. $2.49. For bait, use peanut butter, it will stick on the bait area and will snap mouse's head to death. I caught appro. 8 mice in a month using that tactics. It won't go bad until it kills a mouse. And don't forget to put it against the wall, if there is no dead mouse and u have waited for 3-5 days, re-locate the trap near kitchen's trash can or under the sink area. good luck and enjoy killing those creatures."

Louise P replied: "A snickers bar.... seriously, thats what the pest control people put in those rentokil boxes... mice and rats like the sweetness and the peanuts..."

Kernow Lover replied: "chocolate, it never fails"

willis replied: "i had a mouse in the house and brought a plastic trap,i used white choc buttons put the trap in the area i saw the little critter. the next morning i had slayed the beast,i reset the trap the following night and to my surprise caught another, apparently you rarely have just one mouse, i ended up killing four over a two week period."

How effective is a paiute deadfall trap in catching house mice? Is it fast enough to hit the mouse? I found like 20 mice the other day coming out of an old crack into a duct in the basement and have to do something. I can go to a hardware store to buy a real trap but that's a last resort. Rocks, sticks, and a string is enough and costs 0

julieisbest replied: "Do you know how much of a pain in the butt it will be to build deadfalls all along your basement walls? That is where you have to place them, along the walls - that is how rodents traverse a room because their eyesight is poor. Just buy traps for crying out loud. Deadfalls might cost you nothing but mouse traps cost next to nothing and are probably going to work a lot better."

Do you know of any mouse traps that are cheap, safe to use around dogs, and effective? Last night I saw a mouse in my home and need a mouse trap that will kill the mouse but will be safe to use around a miniature dachsund. She will eat and get into anything so no poisons. I need to know the brand, price and have a basic idea on what it is. Thanks for all your help!

How to trap mouse in the house? There is a mouse in my house. What are the different ways to trap it? What is the most effective way? Thanks for all the responses till now - a follow up question is what's the best place to buy a mousetrap from?

Man.With.A.Plan replied: "Build a better mousetrap."

nipopazleh replied: "mouse trap with peanut butter or tootsie roll .."

kat s replied: "Get those glue traps, they do the trick...good luck"

bibi907 replied: "Mousetrap? Sticky trap?"

prosopopoeia replied: "Standard mouse trap with peanut butter or fried bacon."

erock247 replied: "the glue traps work ok but the mouse can live quite a while before you notice you've caught it. I stay away from poison because they may go somewhere inaccessable to you and die creating a stink you can't get rid of"

jbhitter24 replied: "a good old fashioned mouse trap with some cheese or peanut butter on it. and you need to make sure you kill the mouse (im serious) because ive used the ones that just catch the mouse and the mouse always comes back."

mluxia replied: "Place your mouse trap along the wall with the bait paddle facing the wall as mice tend to run along walls. There are many styles of traps available- from the old fashioned wood and steel spring trap to glue boards to plastic spring traps to live catch traps. All of them are useful, and all should be placed against the wall. Often it is not even necessary to bait the traps as the mouse will trip the trigger by running across it. If you do bait the trap, and find the mice are stealing the bait try placing two traps side by side, often the mouse will trip one while stealing the bait from another. Move the traps once you stop catching mice in a particular spot."

brian c replied: "mice like dark spaces, they try to stay in the shadows. unfortunately for them, they are predictable, always taking same routes. dont forget that they can't survive on food alone so trap your drain areas(sinks, fridgeetc.)use traps up against walls with clamp facing wall- don't use poisons unless you have crawlspace, because they will die where they die and death smells in small spaces"

J.C. replied: "Use glue traps the one that comes in a plastic tray full of glue. Their sold in a four pack.Don't use the ones that come on cardboard the only thing you will find on those is a mouse foot print! Any food placed in the center will do. Just remember to check on them once in the morning and once in the evening. Oh, if you have children or pets you might want to place them behind the fridge, stove, under sink, etc.. away from their reach. Good luck."

union_american replied: "A Victor mouse trap with peanut butter is probably your best bet. It has always worked for me."

toomuchtime replied: "You can buy mouse traps almost anywhere. Grocery store, Walmart, Home Depot, Lowes, etc."

Most effective way to get rid of a mouse in my house??? I do not want to use mouse traps and have to manually remove it. What products are the best to use?

camp1971 replied: "get a cat."

to_sassy4_u replied: "I can't even answer this one with a straight face...lol You have to remove it....no matter what product you use...it won't just go outside and die. LOL"

pestie58 replied: "i like talon but if you want to repel it mix spearmint oil and peppermint oil 50-50 soak cotton ball in it and place in affected areas"

pissy_old_lady replied: "Since you don't want to use mouse traps, I would assume Warfrin would be out of the question, so....I would go to the hardware store and purchase a live trap for it...very humane and you can let it free...of course it will probably come back into the house."

First you have to be smarter then the mouse! If a mouse is using your table or counter put a paper plate with a little peanut butter balanced and hanging half off the counter so the mouse has to go out to get the PB and set a 5 gal bucket underneath it put a few inches of water in it if you don't want to deal with a live mouse . The mouse and the plate will fall into the bucket. They usually take the bait and Yahoo a new pet in your bucket hehe!! Believe me it works well! And if you have kids they think it's fun!!"

Keebler replied: "Get a cat. There are mouse baits that contain warfarin which will make the little bugger bleed to death they work real well."

karasmith78 replied: "Get a good cat! males seem to do the best."

SpaceMonkey67 replied: "If you don't want to use a standard spring type mouse trap, there is another type on the market that is a shoe box sized metal box with a wind up spring that flings them into a compartment. Then you can either drown them, or you can release them into the wild (far from your house, as they WILL come back). If you don't like that idea, there is another method. Set a cap full of Coke out along a baseboard. They can't resist the sweetness. They also can't burp or fart. The gas that is created makes their digestive system explode. It sounds cruel, but hey they are vermin after all. There is no mess to clean up, except for a dead mouse. If that still doesn't thrill you, I have had success with this method; lay on a bed or couch, being completely still (reading a book works). Keep an eye out along the baseboards, as that is their preferred track most of the time. When you see the little critter shoot them with a dart gun. I am not kidding! It worked for me in college. A Kansas dorm infested with mice was a bountiful hunting ground. Of course you HAVE to be a good shot, and willing to deal with a not quite dead mouse too. There are also those glue pads. But if you have pets, watch out. A cat with a glue strip stuck to it's tail can be quite upset. Good luck, and happy hunting."

Kaitlyn replied: "Use a Havahart trap. Please. It wont kill it, but it'll catch it, and you can release it far away from your home."

lpag119 replied: "healthy cute fun happy way to do it get a cat X)"

What the Deuce?! replied: "If I read your Question correctly, you don't want to have to deal with emptying a mechanical mouse trap. Assuming you don't care whether the mouse lives or dies, you might try some of those sticky "walk-in" traps. They're sort of tunnel-shaped, and you place them along baseboards (where mice tend to walk). The flypaper-like adhesive inside will trap the mouse---the more he struggles, the more stuck he'll become. Then you just throw the entire thing away, mouse, trap and all. A "catch-and-release" method I have heard of, but haven't tried, involves a large black umbrella. Yes, seriously. When you know your mouse is in a particular room, you stand by in the room, with the umbrella. When the mouse begins to run, open the umbrella and hold it (curved side down) on the floor, creating a little ramp for the mouse to run into. Apparently mice instinctively run towards dark places, and the black umbrella looks like a nice, dark corner. You can close up the umbrella, keeping the top pointing down, so the mouse can't escape. Then just bring him outside, and set him free. For best results, release him in your neighbor's yard."

Is it necessary to discard a rat trap that has caught and killed a rat? I need to place some rat traps on my property, which is right next to an apartment building with a large dumpster for garbage. I've heard that rat and mouse traps are no longer effective after a rodent has been killed by the trap, because live rats can smell the dead one even if it has been disposed of. Is this accurate or not?

chmar11 replied: "I'm not sure but maybe you could bleach the trap after catching one and see if it still works."

ak replied: "No. Just file a notch in it and reset it!"

no name replied: "either way they are going to come their i have a rentle the same way i use poisen they eat it go away and never come back but cats can get killed by this if it is your home get a cat or a pitbull dog they are the best mouseing dogs alive!!! but yah traps i have seat them and seconds latter they are cought and if ur not around to chang it than nothing will happen and yahh it may attrackt more ,and allways get ride of them they can bring some bad germs and can kill u"

devyn replied: "yes it is, rodents can smell other rodents from quite a ways away, and dead rodents present a different scent, which is a warning for others"

Dave N replied: "You're thinking of bees. Crushed bees emit a scent that angers other bees. A dead rat will smell like any other rotting animal, and as you've surely noticed rats don't mind the smell of rot. I don't think it's strictly necessary to wash and cleanse your rat traps between uses."

gerdie65 replied: "No,just re-bait it and wash your hands.Use peanut butter."

Sholly replied: "I have always reused my traps. Just clean them, really, really good with strong soap and hot water."

starflower replied: "No it doesn't matter if the traps have already caught rats. They will work again. Put some peanut butter on the little bait square. Rodents love peanut butter."

What are fast and effective ways to catch a mouse? This mouse has been roaming in my home for maybe a week and it's bugging everybody! We purchased sticky pads, a mice cube, and the old-fashioned traps. None have worked yet.

sbbjr2000 replied: "decon rat poison hoped you don't have pets"

.Di@ne. replied: "How to catch a mouse without a mousetrap Humanely I had a little friend visit my apartment the other week, and for a while there I was ready to make peace with him and co-exist. But after I cleaned up the place and ordered pizza one night, and it crawled up the side of my chair onto the sleeve of my shirt, I knew it was time to bid farewell. Here's how I caught the critter: Get a toilet paper tube and crease two lines to form a flat sided tunnel. Put a treat on one end of the tube: A cracker and dab of peanut butter works great. Get a tall (at least 20 inches) bucket. A trash can works well. Balance the tube precariously on the edge of a table or counter with the treat hanging directly over the tall sided receptacle. The mouse will scurry to the treat (they like tunnels) and fall into the trap. Set the fella loose at least a mile away from your abode. Postnote: It worked within the hour. Also, folks have asked how this could work if you don't have a counter or table. Simple: get a piece of cardboard and crease it to make a ramp up to a small trashcan. here, I found this on the internet, if it doesn't work, get a cat :D"

uncledjm14 replied: "Old fashioned traps and sticky pads work best. The trick to making a trap work is to tie a bit of thread around the bait holder to force the mouse to tug at it to get the last bit of food; otherwise they can eat all the bait and not trip the trap. The magic mix is peanut butter and jelly, with a drop of anise extract mixed in. For some reason, they can't resist this mix. Keep the traps along walls, and remember, mice like to go high wherever possible. Once you begin to catch them, keep the traps out, where you see one, there's usually three or more. Happy hunting."

HyperDog replied: "I use live-catch traps just for the fun of "taking them for a ride" (not in the gangster sense - release them far from my house)."

katnib replied: "Hello, make sure to use peanut butter on the traps, any of the traps, they can't resist it! If you are looking for a humane trap the t.p. tube and waste basket trick are excellent.Hope this helps:-)"

Rob L replied: "I like the old snap traps best. They're caught, dead, its over. Sticky traps? My wife makes me kill them afterwards so they don't suffer, rather than just chunk them in the trash like that. Too much hassel. Catching them just to have to release them somewhere else? Ain't bothering with that either. Poisons? No. Then they just crawl off and die under something thats a pain to move, or worse, they die in a wall and stink for weeks."

Rachel F replied: "Try Bringing the cat in at night."

unitedwestand replied: "borrow a cat"

14U2NV replied: "Peanut butter on a mouse trap. I had one in my basement and refused to do laundry down there until it was caught. My husband had it the next morning, well at least that is what he told me!"

smokey4u replied: "They have traps there ok then theres sticky pads aloittle better. My fave is my CAT"

80's kid replied: "Chop sticks and a head band - must be a karate head band though."

MAC replied: "My three cats end up 'playing' them to death, which is a bit creepy. We tried the sticky traps as well under the house, which worked well. You just have to put them against the foundation, since mice have lousy eyesight and use the walls to find their way around."

What is an effective way to get rid of mice in my home? I seem to be having a bit of a mouse problem. A few months ago my husband and I set out mouse traps and ended up catching about 15 within two days. The next four or five days after that there was no activity in the mouse traps. I thought we had finally gotten rid of them but now I'm seeing little mousie turds on my counter tops and have seen one or two crawling out of my oven. It's grossing me out and I was wondering if there was any other way that is effective without having to pay for an exterminator?

veg_rose replied: "Why do you think they have exterminators..........because you can't really do it yourself effectively."

tterry replied: "Sounds like a major problem, call an exterminator and consider getting a cat"

jmm1112 replied: "Get a cat - short of that move the traps every few days and use peanut butter to entice them."

sonnyboy replied: "There's a product called Warfarin that I've used in the past. The mice used to love to get into my mobile summer home.Every spring a big mess!! I was advised to use this as it kills the mice but they dry up and causes no odor if one happens to die inside. I placed it in old saucers around my home every fall when I left. You could place a dish of this behind or inside the bottom of your stove and place others in your basement or wherever.Put them up along the rafters if you have little ones or animals.I've advised others to use this and it's worked well for everyone.Won't take long and you'll have no more mice. The box may advise it's for rats but it's ok for you to use. It's the owner of our hardware store that told me to use it."

2 Happily Married Americans replied: "Get a kitty cat. We haven't seen evidence of a mouse in our house for years, unless its one they bring to us as a "gift" for providing shelter to them! No big fees for exterminator, they are on the job 24/7, and are non-toxic."

What is the most effective way to kill a mouse? I have tried everything. peppermint oil, wooden traps, humane traps, those sensors that should scare them away, poison. any other ideas on how to kill them. keep in mind i want them dead! not alive and tossed in a field. Classy Lady replied: "Laughing so hard..............Get you a cat. real simple"

Terence L replied: "We've used mouse traps before and they've always worked. If not, try using a cage-trap where they have to go into it to get the "cheese" or whatever bait and the it closes behind it. Then you can either feed it poison, wait for for it to die, or dispose of it some other way."

kimjoey replied: "Wooden mouse trap, but use peanut butter. They will not be able to pull it off and he will have to really get on it. Then CLAP!!"

llazyiest replied: "You've tried the regular spring type trap? Cat's are pretty good since they're "pro-active".. will hunt them out. Make sure the poisons gone tho. Mice are more than an annoyance.. they spread, among other things, hanta virus."

knowssignlanguage replied: "CALL a professional? I mean you tried everything else. We had a mouse in our house and my husband tried to shoot it with bee bees and the mouse came out stood up on hind legs look at him and then ran off It was soo like a cartoon all he could do was laugh. coltqueen replied: "A real nice loud SCREAM! Works everytime! Nah, I did have a mouse drop dead once when I screamed, but he'd probably already been in the posion or something. I hate mice! The best way for me to catch one is the pnut butter on either the wooden spring traps or the sticky traps. Just put a tiny bit of pnut butter so he really has to get on it to lick the pnut butter. I've even put a tiny dot of pnut butter in the middle of the sticky traps to make sure they get on them good. I know they are still alive on the sticky traps but when you get outside with them a good stomp with some heavy duty workboots usually does the trick. And since we got our tom cat 4 years ago we haven't had a mouse - he's a good'en!"
